KUCHING: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be calling for a meeting soon to discuss the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the amendment to Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution.
He said the meeting will be held under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) led by its minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.
“We will call for a meeting to discuss the MA63 and also the amendment to the Federal Constitution to fulfill the wishes of Sabahans and Sarawakians as enshrined in MA63.
“We will do this immediately,” Muhyiddin told a press conference after chairing his first Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya this morning.
The previous government had tried to amend Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution on April 9 last year but failed to get the required two-thirds majority to be passed in Parliament after Sarawak and other opposition MPs abstained from voting.
According to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the time, his Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MPs abstained from voting to pass that amendment because it did not include the phrase ‘in pursuant to the Malaysia Agreement 1963’.
The then Law Minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong in December last year said the amendment would be re-tabled in March this year.
