KUCHING: Sarawak has performed well in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination 2019 with 16 straight As students, double that of 2018.
In announcing this today, Sarawak Education Department director Azhar Ahmad said there were three 11A+, seven 10A+ and six 9A+ scorers.
“Two 11A+ scorers are from SMK Sacred Heart Sibu and one from SMK Bintulu; two 10A+ from SMK Chung Hua Miri and SMK St Anthony Sarikei; and one each from SMK Green Road Kuching, SMK Batu Lintang and SMK Jalan Arang Padawan, two 9A+ from SMK Green Road Kuching, and one each from SMK Muara Tuang Samarahan, SMK Bintulu, SMK St Joseph Miri and SM Sains Miri,” he announced at the auditorium of the department off Jalan Diplomatik here.
In terms of state grade average (GPN), Sarawak did slightly better at 5.18 compared to 5.19 the previous year.
He said in the examination, 36,021 candidates sat for 65 subjects. A total of 59 subjects achieved passing rate above 80 per cent, and from that figure, 25 subjects achieved 100 per cent passing rate, 27 achieved between 90 per cent and 99.9 per cent passing rate, and seven achieved between 80 per cent and 89.9 per cent passing rate.
On the schools performance, 21 schools in the state recorded a school average grade (GPS) of four and below, compared to 19 the previous year, which is up by 10.53 per cent.
“Top on the list of schools attaining excellent achievements is SM Sains Kuching Utara, Padawan with a GPS of 1.91, followed by SM Sains Miri with a GPS of 2.04, SMK St Elizabeth, Sibu (2.42), SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu (2.80) and Kolej Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah, Kuching (2.83).
He added that 19 schools have at least 10 students scoring minimum A- in all subjects taken.
Of these 19 schools, SMK Green Road has the highest with 35 students followed by SMK Tung Hua Sibu (28), SMK Methodist Sibu (27), SMK Sacred Heart Sibu (25), SMK St Anthony Sarikei (25), SMK Tinggi Kuching (25), SMK Chung Hua Miri (23), SMK Bintulu (23), SM Sains Kuching Utara Padawan (21), SMK St Elizabeth Sibu (21), SMK Batu Lintang Kuching (20), SM Sains Miri (16), SMK Tinggi Sarikei (15), SMK Lutong Miri (13), Kolej Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah Kuching (12), SMK Tiong Hin Sibu (12), SMK Sungai Tapang Samarahan (11), SMK Sungai Maong Kuching (11) and SMK Deshon Sibu (10).
